Melphalan

Indications/Uses

Multiple myeloma. Advanced ovarian adenocarcinoma. Breast carcinoma. Polycythemia rubra vera.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Multiple myeloma 0.15 mg/kg daily in divided doses for 4 days repeated at 6-wk intervals. Advanced ovarian adenocarcinoma 0.2 mg/kg daily for 5 days, repeated 4-8 wkly. Breast carcinoma 0.15 mg/kg or 6 mg/m² daily for 5 days, repeated 6 wkly. Polycythemia rubra vera 6-10 mg daily for 5-7 days then 2-4 mg daily until satisfactorily controlled. Maintenance: 2-6 mg once wkly.

Overdosage

Administration

Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take on an empty stomach 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.

Contraindications

Lactation.

Bone marrow depression eg, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia; nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea; stomatitis & alopecia (high doses); temporary significant elevations of blood urea.
