α-lipoic acid.
Description
1 film-coated tablet contains: 600 mg α-lipoic acid.
Action
Thiogamma 600 oral is a medication for the treatment of neuropathy. The active substance α-lipoic acid is also formed in the body's own metabolism and influences certain metabolic effects in the body.
Indications/Uses
Sensory disturbances associated with diabetic nerve damage (diabetic polyneuropathy).
Dosage/Direction for Use
The following applies unless the doctor has given other instructions concerning the use of Thiogamma 600 oral. Please adhere to these instructions, as otherwise Thiogamma 600 oral cannot act correctly.
How much and how often Thiogamma 600 oral should be taken: For Adult over 18 years of age, unless the doctor advises otherwise, take 1 Thiogamma 600 oral film-coated tablet a day (corresponding to 600 mg α-lipoic acid).
How and when Thiogamma 600 oral should be taken: Thiogamma 600 oral should be taken whole (unchewed) with sufficient fluid. The medication to be taken approximately 30 minutes before meals.
How long Thiogamma 600 oral should be taken: As diabetic nerve damage is a chronic concomitant disease, it may be that Thiogamma 600 oral has to be taken on a permanent basis. This decision is made by the doctor treating the patient from case to case.
Overdosage
Symptoms of an overdose may be nausea, vomiting and headaches. In case of a suspected major overdose, e.g. more than 10 tablets of 600 mg in adults, the patient must be attended by a medical professional without delay and measures taken in line with the general treatment principles for cases of poisoning.
Contraindications
Thiogamma 600 oral must not be taken in cases of known hypersensitivity (allergy) to alpha-lipoic acid or hypersensitivity to any other ingredient of the preparation.
Special Precautions
Take special care with Thiogamma 600 oral if intolerance to some sugars is present. Contact the doctor before taking Thiogamma 600 oral.
Patients with a certain human leukocyte antigen genotype (which is more frequent in Japanese and Korean patients, but is also found in Caucasians) are more prone to development of insulin autoimmune syndrome (disorder of the blood glucose regulating hormones with pronounced lowering of blood sugar levels) when treated with thioctic acid.
Use in Pregnancy: As it is not known whether it is safe to take the medication during pregnancy, upon becoming pregnant the patient should only continue to take Thiogamma 600 oral if advised to do so by the doctor.
Use in Lactation: It is not known whether α-lipoic acid passes into the mother's milk. Thiogamma 600 oral should therefore never be taken while breast-feeding.
Use in Children: Children and juveniles should not be treated with Thiogamma 600 oral as there is no clinical experience of this.
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
Precautions to be taken during pregnancy: As it is not known whether it is safe to take the medication during pregnancy, upon becoming pregnant the patient should only continue to take Thiogamma 600 oral if advised to do so by the doctor.
Precautions to be taken during breast-feeding: It is not known whether α-lipoic acid passes into the mother's milk. Thiogamma 600 oral should therefore never be taken while breast-feeding.
Side Effects
Side effects that may occur while taking Thiogamma 600 oral: Individual cases have been reported of gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, vomiting, stomach and intestinal pain as well as diarrhoea. There may be individual cases of allergic reactions such as skin rashes, urticaria and itching. Very rare cases of changes or disturbances to the sense of taste have been reported. Due to improved glucose utilisation, the blood-sugar level may fall in individual cases. This has been associated with hypoglycaemia-type symptoms such as vertigo, sweating, headaches and disturbances in vision. If side effects are observed which are not listed, please inform the doctor or pharmacist.
Frequency unknown (cannot be estimated from the available data): Disorder of the blood glucose regulating hormones with pronounced lowering of blood sugar levels (insulin autoimmune syndrome).
Countermeasures to be taken if side effects occur: If the previously mentioned side effects are observed, Thiogamma 600 oral should not be used again. Inform the doctor so that the seriousness and any necessary measures can be decided on. Upon the first signs of an allergic reaction, the use of the medication should be terminated and the doctor consulted immediately.
Drug Interactions
Other medications that change the effects of Thiogamma 600 oral and precautions to be observed when taking other medication: Please note that the following may also apply to medication taken until recently.
It cannot be excluded that the simultaneous use of Thiogamma 600 oral may result in Cisplatin losing its effect.
Alpha-lipoic acid undergoes a chemical compound with metal (metal chelator) and for fundamental reasons should not therefore be administered at the same time as metal compounds (e.g. iron preparations, magnesium preparations, milk products due to the calcium content).
The blood-sugar lowering effect of insulin or oral antidiabetics (blood-sugar lowering agents) may be intensified. Therefore a close-meshed blood-sugar analysis is advisable, particularly at the start of the therapy with Thiogamma 600 oral. In individual cases it may become necessary to reduce the insulin dose or the dose of the oral antidiabetic in accordance with the instructions of the doctor treating the patient in order to avoid symptoms of hypoglycaemia.
Stimulants, foods and drinks to be avoided: Alcohol should be strictly avoided during treatment with Thiogamma 600 oral, as the therapeutic effect of α-lipoic acid is weakened by alcohol and its decomposition products.
Storage
This medication should be stored carefully below 25°C.
