Mefenamic acid
Indications/Uses
Relief of mild to moderate pain including headache, dental pain, post-op & postpartum pain, & dysmenorrhoea; musculoskeletal & joint disorders eg, OA & RA; menorrhagia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 500 mg, followed by 250 mg every 6 hr as needed, for no longer than 7 days at a time.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/ or immediately after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity including asthma, urticaria, rhinitis. Active peptic ulceration. Inflammatory bowel disease. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Risk of GI ulceration, bleeding, & perforation; increased risk in patients w/ history of serious GI events & other risk factors associated w/ PUD (eg, alcoholism, smoking, & corticosteroid therapy). Should not be co-administered w/ other NSAIDs. Caution in the elderly, in patients w/ bronchospasm, bleeding disorders, CV disease, & in liver or kidney failure. Greater risk of renal dysfunction due to NSAID-induced inhibition of renal prostaglandin synthesis in patients w/ CHF, cirrhosis, diuretic-induced vol depletion, or renal insufficiency. Discontinue therapy in patients who develop diarrhoea or rash. Safety & efficacy have not been established in childn ≤14 yr.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances including diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, & abdominal pain.
Drug Interactions
Enhanced effects of oral anticoagulants, phenytoin, & sulphonylurea antidiabetics. Increased plasma conc of lithium, MTX, & cardiac glycosides. Increased risk of nephrotoxicity w/ ACE inhibitors, cyclosporine, or diuretics. Increased risk of hyperkalaemia w/ ACE inhibitors & K-sparing diuretics. Reduced antihypertensive effects of some antihypertensive agents including ACE inhibitors, β-blockers, & diuretics. Risk of convulsions w/ quinolones. Increased risk of adverse effects w/ concomitant use of >1 NSAID. Increased risk of GI bleeding & ulceration w/ corticosteroids. Some NSAIDs can interfere w/ thyroid function tests by lowering serum thyroid hormone conc.
