Indications/Uses
Relief of heartburn symptoms associated w/ acid reflux in patients ≥18 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Recommended & max dose: 20 mg (1 tab) daily.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take before meals, at the same time every day. Swallow whole, do not chew/break.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Concomitant use w/ HIV PIs eg, atazanavir, nelfinavir.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if patient is completely symptom-free; if lesions occur, especially in sun-exposed areas of the skin, & accompanied by arthralgia; if patient get a skin rash especially in areas exposed to sun. Not to be taken >4 wk. Patients treated for heartburn or indigestion continuously for ≥4 wk. History of gastric ulcer or stomach surgery. Patients >55 yr taking nonprescription indigestion treatment daily; w/ new or recently changed reflux symptoms. Patients due to have endoscopy, C-urea test, & Chromogranin A test. Risk of vit B12 deficiency. May lead to slightly increased risk of GI infections eg, Salmonella & Campylobacter & possibly Clostridium difficile. Increased risk for osteoporosis-related fractures of the hip, wrist or spine in long-term (≥1 yr) & multiple daily dose. Patients should use the lowest dose & shortest duration of therapy appropriate to the condition being treated. Symptomatic & asymptomatic hypomagnesemia. Consider monitoring Mg levels prior to treatment initiation & periodically. Concomitant use w/ HIV PIs; MTX. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Patients w/ liver problems or jaundice. Not to be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Not to be used by childn & adolescents <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Benign polyps in the stomach.
Drug Interactions
May elevate & prolong serum levels of MTX &/or its metabolite. Concomitant use w/ HIV PIs (eg, atazanavir, nelfinavir); ketoconazole; warfarin & phenprocoumon; other PPIs (omeprazole, lansoprazole or rabeprazole); H2 antagonist (eg, ranitidine, famotidine).
