Acetaminophen (paracetamol)
Indications/Uses
Reduces fever. Relieves mild-to-moderate pain associated w/ cold & flu, headache, teething, immunization.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Childn ≥3 mth 10-15 mg/kg/dose every 4 hr. Max: 4 doses in 24 hr. Max duration of continued use w/o medical advice: 3 days.
Special Precautions
Always use the lowest effective dose for the shortest period of time. Overdose may cause liver failure. Do not use w/ any other paracetamol-containing prescription or non-prescription medicines. Avoid use w/ alcohol. Should not be taken by patients w/ rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance. Caution in underweight or malnourished patients; patients w/ severe infection; patients w/ liver or kidney impairment. Not recommended in childn <3 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Rare: Thrombocytopenia; anaphylaxis; cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions including skin rashes, angioedema, & SJS; bronchospasm in patients sensitive to aspirin & other NSAIDs; hepatic dysfunction.
Drug Interactions
Anticoagulant effect of warfarin & other coumarins may be enhanced by prolonged regular daily use of acetaminophen w/ increased risk of bleeding.
