Indications/Uses
Renal osteodystrophy in patients w/ chronic kidney failure. Postmenopausal osteoporosis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Renal osteodystrophy Initially 0.25 mcg daily. May be increased by 0.25 mcg at 2-4 wk intervals. Postmenopausal osteoporosis 0.25 mcg bd.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to calcitriol & vit D products (eg, alfacalcidol). High levels of Ca in the blood or tissues.
Special Precautions
Do not co-administer w/ other vit D & vit D-fortified products. Measure blood Ca levels regularly. Concomitant use w/ phosphate binding agents eg, Al hydroxide, Ca carbonate; barbiturates eg, amylobarbitone, phenobarb; anticonvulsants eg, phenytoin, clonazepam. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Hypercalcaemia which may cause nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, weakness, headache, sleepiness or apathy. Dehydration, thirst, excessive urination &/or increased urination at bedtime, irregular heartbeat, stomach pain, swollen stomach or constipation.
Drug Interactions
Phosphate binding agents (eg, Al hydroxide, Ca carbonate), barbiturates (eg, amylobarbitone, phenobarb), anticonvulsants (eg, phenytoin, clonazepam).
