Mavacamten - Oral

Why do I need this medicine?
Mavacamten is used to treat a certain type of heart disease called obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (abnormally thick heart muscle that results in blockage of blood flow).
How do I take this medicine?
Take this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take Mavacamten with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the course of treatment depending on the severity of your condition and your response to the medication.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant while on Mavacamten therapy, alert your doctor immediately. This medicine may cause harm to your unborn child.

It is important that you do not get pregnant while taking this medicine. You must use proven birth control methods during Mavacamten therapy and for 6 months after stopping the treatment. Birth control medicines containing certain hormones may not be effective. You may wish to discuss other reliable methods of birth control with your doctor.

Do not take Mavacamten with medicines to treat fungal infection, certain antibiotics, and medicines for HIV infection or cancer. Please see the section "Can I take this with other medicines?" below for more information.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • serious infection
  • irregular or abnormal heartbeat
  • liver disease
  • severe kidney disease
Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding.

If you are going to have an operation, including minor surgery and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medicine.

Individuals who are poor metabolisers of CYP2C19 may affect the effectiveness of Mavacamten. Your doctor may advise you to undergo genetic testing before starting your treatment with this medicine. If you know you have this gene type, inform your doctor.

Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
  • ECG (test used to record the electrical activity of the heart) and pregnancy test must be done before treatment, to know if Mavacamten is suited for you to take.
  • Routine ECG and heart function test may also be done while you are being treated with this medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
  • Regular monitoring of signs and symptoms of heart problem may also be needed.
What side effects could I experience?
Mavacamten may cause dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Other side effects include any of the following: fainting and difficulty of breathing.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience new or worsening chest pain, tiredness, fast and irregular heartbeat, and swelling of the legs.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Do not take Mavacamten with the following medicines:
  • medicines to treat fungal infection e.g. ketoconazole, itraconazole, posaconazole, voriconazole
  • certain antibiotics e.g. clarithromycin
  • medicines for HIV infection e.g. ritonavir, cobicistat
  • medicines for cancer e.g. ceritinib, tucatinib, idelalisib
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • ranolazine (medicine for chest pain)
  • medicines for high blood pressure or heart disease e.g. disopyramide, verapamil, diltiazem
  • St. John's wort (herbal medicine)
  • birth control pills
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Mavacamten.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.

Avoid excessive consumption of grapefruit or grapefruit juice (more than 1 litre a day).
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
