Indications/Uses
In association w/ other antiepileptic medicines for the treatment of epilepsy characterised by the occurrence of partial-onset seizure w/ or w/o secondary generalisation in adults & adolescents ≥16 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adolescent ≥16 yr weighing ≥50 kg, & adult Initially 50 mg bd, may be increased every wk by 50 mg until maintenance dose of 100-200 mg bd is reached. Treatment may be started w/ single loading dose of 200 mg, then maintenance dose 12 hr later. Adolescent ≥16 yr weighing <50 kg Dose depends on body wt.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow w/ water.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. 2nd or 3rd degree AV block.
Special Precautions
Caution in patients w/ thoughts of harming or killing themselves; slow, fast or irregular heartbeat (eg, AV block, atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter); severe heart disease (eg, heart failure, history of heart attack); new type of seizure or worsening of existing seizures. Do not abruptly stop treatment. Do not take w/ alcohol. May cause dizziness or blurred vision; do not drive or use any tools or machines. Fertile women should discuss use of contraceptives. Not recommended during pregnancy. Not recommended to breastfeed during treatment.
Adverse Reactions
Headache; nausea; diplopia; somnolence (in childn). Myoclonic seizures; problems in keeping balance, difficulties in coordinating movements or walking, tremor, paresthesia or muscle spasms, falling easily & getting bruises; troubles w/ memory, thinking or finding words, confusion; nystagmus, blurred vision; vertigo, feeling drunk; vomiting, dry mouth, constipation, indigestion, excessive gas in stomach or bowel, diarrhoea; decreased feeling or sensitivity, difficulty in articulating words, disturbance in attention; buzzing, ringing or whistling noise in ear; irritability, trouble sleeping, depression; sleepiness, tiredness or asthenia; itching, rash.
Drug Interactions
Potential interaction w/ heart problem medicines; PR interval-increasing medicines eg, carbamazepine, lamotrigine, pregabalin; medicines for certain types of irregular heartbeat or heart failure. Increased or decreased effect w/ fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, ritonavir, clarithromycin, rifampicin, St. John's wort.
