Indications/Uses
Dosage/Direction for Use
Prophylaxis of K deficiency 2-3 cap daily (corresponding to 16-24 mmol K ions). Can be started w/ 1 cap tds, then adapted to personal K requirement if necessary. Treatment of K deficiency 5-12 cap daily (corresponding to 40-96 mmol K ions). Can be started w/ 2 cap tds, then adapted to personal K requirement if necessary.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Swallow whole w/ plenty of fluid. In case of swallowing difficulties, both halves of the cap can be pulled apart & the contents taken from a spoon.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. In case of diseases that are commonly linked to hyperkalaemia (eg, restricted excretory kidney function, dehydration, Addison's disease, adynamia episodica hereditaria, sickle cell anaemia, metabolic imbalances in the acid region). In case of elevated blood K level due to movement of K from intracellular to extracellular space.
Special Precautions
Carefully consider the prescription of a solid prep in patients w/ known impairment of the oesophagus or GIT. Check mineral & acid base balances, cardiac rhythm & kidney function, particularly in elderly patients, prior to use & monitor during treatment initially in shorter intervals & later in longer intervals. Not intended for use in childn.
Adverse Reactions
Upper abdominal & intestinal symptoms, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea.
Drug Interactions
Risk of hyperkalaemia w/ ACE inhibitors, ARBs, aldosterone antagonists, K-saving diuretics or NSAIDs & peripheral analgesics eg, indomethacin. Increased risk of GI effects w/ anticholinergics.
