Haemophilus influenzae type B conjugate vaccine helps protect infants and children against infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae type B.
Haemophilus influenzae type B is a type of bacteria that can cause severe illnesses such as blood infection, meningitis (infection of the lining covering the brain and spinal cord), pneumonia (an infection that causes inflammation of one or both lungs), and epiglottitis (infection in a part of the windpipe).
Haemophilus influenzae type B conjugate vaccine injection is to be given intramuscularly (into the muscle), usually into the muscles of the thigh or upper arm.
A doctor or nurse will administer the injection for your child.
The total number of injections that your child will receive will be decided by the doctor.
Ensure that you keep all appointments with the doctor so that your child does not miss any doses.
If your child misses an appointment or an injection, alert the doctor or nurse.
Do not use Haemophilus influenzae type B conjugate vaccine if your child ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any of its ingredients.
Inform the doctor if your child has the following conditions:
- bleeding problems
- lower than normal platelet count in the blood
- history of Guillain-Barre syndrome (a rare disorder in which your body's immune system attacks your nerves)
- moderate to severe illness
- weak immune system
If your child is going to have any laboratory tests, inform the doctor that your child was recently immunised with
Haemophilus influenzae type B conjugate vaccine.
Haemophilus influenzae type B conjugate vaccine may cause any of the following side effects: drowsiness, vomiting, diarrhoea, irritability, loss of appetite, fever, and pain, tenderness, swelling or redness at the injection site.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert the doctor quickly if your child experiences any of the following:
- rashes, breathlessness, swelling of the face, eyes or mouth
- fainting or passing out
Inform the doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if your child experiences other side effects.
Inform the doctor and pharmacist if your child is taking or using any of these medicines:
- medicines for cancer
- high doses of anti-inflammatory medicines
- medicines used in organ transplants or certain immune disorders
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with
Haemophilus influenzae type B conjugate vaccine.
Always notify the doctor and pharmacist if your child is taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Store in the refrigerator, between 2-8°C.
Do not freeze Haemophilus influenzae type B conjugate vaccine otherwise, it will no longer be effective and should not be used.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
