Why do I need this medicine?
Guaifenesin is an expectorant. It helps relieve productive cough (a type of cough which produces mucus or phlegm) by loosening the phlegm which makes it easier to cough up.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Guaifenesin exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Guaifenesin is available as a conventional tablet, capsule, extended-release tablet, or oral solution.

If you are taking the conventional tablet or capsule, swallow it whole with a glass of water.

If you are taking the extended-release type of tablet (usually labelled as "ER"), swallow it whole. Do not divide, chew or crush the tablet.

If you are taking an oral solution, shake the bottle well before you take the medicine to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.

Ensure adequate fluid intake while taking Guaifenesin.

You may stop taking this medicine when you have no more cough.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • persistent or chronic cough e.g. cough that occurs with smoking or asthma
  • cough accompanied by excessive phlegm
  • asthma
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Guaifenesin to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.

If you are going to have certain laboratory tests (e.g. urine test), inform your doctor that you are taking this medicine.

Notify your doctor if your symptoms do not improve within 7 days or if your cough is accompanied by fever, rash, or persistent headache.
What side effects could I experience?
Guaifenesin may cause any of the following side effects: stomach pain, diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, headache, dizziness, and rash.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any cough suppressant.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
