Ganciclovir is medicine used to treat viral infections.
This medicine is used to treat an eye infection called acute herpetic keratitis.
Use Ganciclovir eye gel exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Wash your hands with soap and water before applying the eye gel.
How to apply the eye drop solution:
1. Wash your hands.
2. Tilt your head slightly backwards with the index finger, pull the lower eyelid away from the eye to form a pouch and look upwards. Apply the required number of drops inside the lower eyelid.
3. Close your eyes and roll them slowly in all directions. Do not blink for the next 30 seconds.
4. Wipe any excess liquid from your face with a clean tissue.
5. Replace and tighten the cap of the bottle.
Do not touch/wipe/ rinse the dropper tip, and do not let the dropper tip touch the eye, eyelids or other surfaces.
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose to make up for a missed dose.
Alert your doctor if you ever had an allergic reaction (breathlessness, rashes, swollen eyes) to similar antiviral medications.
Refrain from wearing contact lenses while you are using this medicine.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Throw away any remaining eye drops 4 weeks after opening. Mark the date of opening on the tube so that you know when the bottle was opened.
Ganciclovir may cause blurred vision. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert. This medicine may also cause burning or brief tingling sensations and eye irritations.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- medicines for HIV e.g. zidovudine
- medicines for cancer e.g. vincristine, vinblastine
- medicines for fungal infections e.g. amphotericin B
- antibiotics e.g. imipinem, cilastatin
- medicine for gout e.g. probenecid
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Ganciclovir.
If you are using other eye preparation medicines, there should be an interval of 5 minutes between the two medications. Ganciclovir eye gel should be the last medication applied.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Do not freeze.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
