Fidaxomicin - Oral

Why do I need this medicine?
Fidaxomicin is an antibiotic. It is used to treat infection caused by certain bacteria called Clostridioides difficile. This infection can cause severe, painful diarrhoea.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Fidaxomicin exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Fidaxomicin is available as a tablet or granules for oral suspension.

If you are taking the tablet, swallow it whole with a glass of water.

If you are taking the oral suspension, shake the bottle well before you take the medicine to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring device (e.g. oral syringe) provided to measure your dose.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the severity of your infection and your response to the medication.

Take Fidaxomicin at regular intervals. Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of this medicine. If you don't, the infection will not be properly controlled.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not take Fidaxomicin if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any of its ingredients.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • allergy with certain antibiotic group called macrolides e.g. erythromycin, azithromycin, clarithromycin
  • severe kidney disease
  • moderate to severe liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Fidaxomicin to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly. Monitoring of signs and symptoms of allergic reactions may also be needed.
What side effects could I experience?
Fidaxomicin may cause any of the following side effects: nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, constipation, stomach wind, dry mouth, indigestion, altered sense of taste, headache, dizziness, and decreased appetite.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • rashes, breathlessness, itchy skin, swelling of the deep layers of the skin usually around the face, throat, and mouth
  • pass out bloody or black as tar stools and vomiting blood or ground coffee-like material
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking ciclosporin (medicine used in organ transplants or certain immune disorders).

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Refrigerate the oral suspension (between 2-8°C) once you have mixed the granules with water. Do not freeze it otherwise, it will become less effective. Throw away unused portion after 12 days.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
