Indications/Uses
Prevent pregnancy. Can be used by women not tolerating oestrogens & by breastfeeding women.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Take 1 tab every day at about the same time, w/o interruption & w/o waiting for a bleed.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Take at the same time each day. Swallow whole w/ water.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ thrombosis (DVT, pulmonary embolism); existing or history of jaundice or severe liver disease; confirmed or suspected cancer that grows under the influence of sex-steroids eg, certain types of breast cancer; any unexplained vag bleeding.
Special Precautions
Vag bleeding may occur at irregular intervals during use. Does not protect against HIV infection (AIDS) or any other STD. Caution before starting treatment in patients w/ history of breast cancer; liver cancer; history of thrombosis; diabetes; epilepsy; TB; high BP; existing or history of chloasma. Risk of breast cancer; thrombosis (DVT, pulmonary embolism). Reports of depression or depressed mood. Perform regular check-ups while on treatment. Exercise caution in case of possible signs of blood clot; sudden, severe stomachache or jaundice; presence of a breast lump; sudden or severe pain in the lower abdomen or stomach area; immobilisation or undergoing surgery; unusual, heavy vag bleeding; suspecting pregnancy. Add a barrier contraceptive method if taking medicines or herbal products that might make Bredicon less effective. Sugar (lactose) intolerance. Do not use if pregnant. No clinical data on efficacy & safety in adolescents <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Altered &/or depressed mood, decreased sexual drive (libido); headache; nausea; acne; breast pain, irregular or no menstruation; increased body wt.
Drug Interactions
Altered desogestrel blood levels, reduced effectiveness, or unexpected bleeding w/ primidone, phenytoin, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, felbamate, topiramate, phenobarb; rifampicin, rifabutin; ritonavir, nelfinavir, nevirapine, efavirenz; boceprevir, telaprevir; griseofulvin; bosentan; St. John's wort; clarithromycin, erythromycin; ketoconazole, itraconazole, fluconazole; diltiazem. Increased effect of cyclosporine-containing medicines. Decreased effect of lamotrigine.
