Symptomatic relief of inflammatory conditions of the mouth & pharynx, including stomatitis, gingivitis, aphthous ulcers, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, monilial infections, & sore throat due to common colds & flu. Prophylactic during & after surgery eg, after tonsillectomy & dental procedures. Routine use for oral hygiene.
Adult, elderly & childn >6 yr Use undiluted or diluted w/ 2 parts of water. Prophylactic use Allow soln to act in the mouth for a min of 30 sec. Existing lesions Rinse mouth w/ soln for 2 min, qds, especially after meals.
Do not swallow. Special caution when regularly applying to broken skin in patients w/ pre-existing renal insufficiency. Thyroid function tests may be affected. Povidone-iodine contamination of several tests for detecting occult blood in faeces or blood in urine may produce false +ve results. Remove false teeth or braces from the mouth prior to use. Avoid use during pregnancy & lactation unless potential benefit to mother justifies potential risk to foetus/neonate, or if safer alternative is unavailable.
Very rarely, irritation of the lining of the mouth & sensitivity reactions. Systemic adverse effects (eg, metabolic acidosis, hypernatraemia & renal impairment) w/ long-term use.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ wound-treatment prep containing enzymatic component leads to weakened effects of both substances. Potential interaction w/ products containing Hg, silver, hydrogen peroxide, & taurolidine. Simultaneous use w/ Hg products may lead to formation of mucosa-damaging substance. May interfere w/ thyroid function tests. After povidone-iodine treatment, allow 4 wk before carrying out new scintigram. Several tests for detecting occult blood in faeces or blood in urine may be affected (ie, false +ve results). Transient dark discolourations at application site when povidone-iodine is used before or after application of octenidine.
