Indications/Uses
Steroid responsive inflammatory conditions of the palpebral & bulbar conjunctiva, cornea, & anterior segment of the globe eg, allergic conjunctivitis, acne rosacea, superficial punctate keratitis, herpes zoster keratitis, iritis, cyclitis, selected infective conjunctivitis (when the inherent hazard of steroid use is accepted to obtain an advisable diminution in edema & inflammation), corneal injury from chemical, radiation, or thermal burns, or penetration of foreign bodies.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially, 1 or 2 drops into the conjunctival sac up to every hr during the day & every 2 hr during the night as necessary. Reduce dose to 1 drop every 4 hr when favorable response is observed. Later, further reduction to 1 drop tds-qds may suffice to control symptoms.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Acute superficial herpes simplex keratitis; fungal diseases of ocular structures; acute infectious stages of vaccinia, varicella & most other viral diseases of the cornea & conjunctiva; TB of the eye. After uncomplicated removal of a superficial corneal foreign body.
Special Precautions
Risk of corneal fungal infections w/ long-term steroid application. Frequently check IOP. Pregnancy & lactation. Safety & effectiveness in ped patients have not been established.
Adverse Reactions
Glaucoma w/ optic nerve damage; visual acuity & field defects; posterior subcapsular cataract formation; secondary ocular infections from pathogens including herpes simplex & fungi; perforation of the globe.
Drug Interactions
Increased effect of barbiturates, sedative hypnotics, TCAs. Decreased effect of anticholinesterases, antiviral eye prep, salicylates.
