Lidocaine + Fluorescein

Hypersensitivity to lidocaine, fluorescein, and other amide-type local anaesthetics.

Patient with an inflamed eye (as it may increase the systemic absorption through the conjunctiva). Elderly. Pregnancy and lactation.

Significant: Blurred vision, corneal inflammation (prolonged use).
Eye disorders: Allergic conjunctivitis, periorbital oedema.
Immune system disorders: Anaphylactic reactions.
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: Urticaria, rash.

This drug may cause blurred vision which may impair visual acuity, if affected, do not drive or operate machinery. Protect the anaesthetised eye from foreign body contamination, particularly in the elderly whose duration of anaesthesia may be >30 minutes. To minimise systemic absorption, may compress the lacrimal sac at the medial canthus for 1 minute after instillation.

Description:
Mechanism of Action: Lidocaine is an amide-type local anaesthetic agent that blocks the sensory nerve endings of the cornea.
Fluorescein is a fluoresce dye that stains damaged or abraded cornea, disrupted ocular fluids, and foreign bodies. It is used to detect corneal lesions and foreign bodies and as an aid in various diagnostic ophthalmic procedures.

Pharmacokinetics:
Distribution: Enters breast milk.
Lidocaine: Crosses the placenta.
