Diphenhydramine HCl

Indications/Uses

Perennial & seasonal allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis due to inhalant allergens & foods, mild uncomplicated allergic skin manifestation of urticaria & angioedema; amelionation of allergic reactions to blood or plasma in patients w/ known history of such reactions; dermographism; as adjunctive anaphylactic therapy.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Hypersensitivity reactions, antiparkinsonism Adult & childn ≥12 yr 25-50 mg 4-6 hrly. Max: 300 mg in 24 hr. Childn 6-12 yr 12.5-25 mg 4-6 hrly or 5 mg/kg/day. Max: 150 mg in 24 hr. Motion sickness Adult & childn ≥12 yr 50 mg before exposure to motion & at bedtime. Childn 6-12 yr 25 mg before exposure to motion & at bedtime. Sleep disorders Adult & childn ≥12 yr 50 mg at bedtime. Childn 2-12 yr 1 mg/kg 30 min before retiring.

Administration

Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take before exposure to motion or before meals & at bedtime.

Special Precautions

Caution when driving or operating machinery. Angle-closure glaucoma, pyloroduodenal (including stenotic peptic ulcer) & urinary tract obstruction (including bladder-neck & symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy), hyperthyroidism, increased IOP, CV disease (HTN & tachycardia). Prolonged use in elderly.

Drug Interactions

Potentiates sedative effects of CNS depressants or alcohol.
