Ciprofloxacin (Tab: HCl; Infusion: Lactate)
Indications/Uses
Cystitis, resp tract infections, UTI, GIT; ENT, biliary tract, skin & soft tissues, bone & joints infections; specific severe infection ie, mucoviscidosis, abdominal, severe chronic otitis; acute gonorrhea. Empirical therapy for febrile neutropenia in combination w/ piperacillin.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab
Cystitis
100-250 mg bid.
Infections of resp tract, UTI, GIT
250-500 mg bid.
ENT, biliary tract, skin & soft tissues, bones & joints infections
500 mg bid.
Specific severe infection ie, mucoviscidosis, abdominal, severe chronic otitis
;
acute gonorrhea
250 mg single dose.
IV infusion
UTI
200-400 mg 12 hrly.
Lower resp tract, bone & joint, skin & skin structure
400 mg 8-12 hrly.
Empirical therapy for febrile neutropenia (in combination w/ piperacillin)
400 mg 8 hrly.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to minimise GI discomfort. Do not take w/ antacids, Fe or dairy products.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to quinolones. Infant & prepubertal childn. Pregnancy, lactation.
Special Precautions
Renal or hepatic impairment, epilepsy; CNS damage.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances, insomnia, dizziness, headache; skin rash; pain & local irritation at inj site accompanied rarely by phlebitis or thrombophlebitis.
