Brimonidine tartrate
Indications/Uses
Lowering of IOP in patients w/ open-angle glaucoma or ocular HTN.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Alphagan 1 drop in the affected eye(s) bid. An additional drop in the afternoon can be added for patients w/ IOP peaks in the afternoon or need additional IOP control. Alphagan P 0.1% 1 drop in the affected eye(s) tid approx 8 hr apart.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients on MAOI therapy. Neonates & infants; childn <2 yr.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ depression, cerebral or coronary insufficiency, Raynaud's phenomenon, orthostatic hypotension or thromboangiitis obliterans. Routinely monitor patients for IOP. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Hepatic or renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. High incidence & severity of somnolence in childn ≥2 yr especially those weighing ≤20 kg. Childn <2 yr. Alphagan Delayed ocular hypersensitivity. Patients w/ severe CV disease. Instruct patients wearing soft contact lenses to wait at least 15 min after instillation prior to inserting soft contact lenses.
Adverse Reactions
Oral dryness, conjunctival folliculosis. Asthenia, foreign body sensation, ocular burning, pruritus, ache/pain & dryness, eyelid erythema, conjunctivitis. Dizziness, headache. Alphagan Ocular hyperemia, stinging & allergic reactions, blurring, fatigue/drowsiness. Corneal staining/erosion, photophobia, tearing, upper resp symptoms, eyelid & conjunctival edema, blepharitis, ocular irritation, GI symptoms, conjunctival blanching, abnormal vision, muscular pain. Lid crusting, conjunctival hemorrhage, discharge & papillae, abnormal taste, insomnia, depression, HTN, anxiety, palpitations, nasal dryness, syncope. Iritis, iridocyclitis (anterior uveitis), miosis, eyelid pruritus; hypersensitivity, skin reaction (including erythema, face edema, pruritus, rash, & vasodilatation); arrhythmias (including bradycardia or tachycardia); hypotension. Alphagan P 0.1% Allergic conjunctivitis, conjunctival hyperemia. Somnolence, superficial punctate keratitis. Increased lacrimation, blurred vision.
Drug Interactions
Additive or potentiating effect w/ CNS depressants (alcohol, barbiturates, opiates, sedatives or anesth). Concomitant use w/ β-blockers (ophth & systemic), antihypertensives &/or cardiac glycosides; TCAs.
