Indications/Uses
Prevention & treatment of vit &/or mineral deficiencies.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals for better absorption.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Pregnancy & lactation. Vit A: Patients who have hypervitaminosis A.
Special Precautions
History of stroke or risk factors for stroke; coagulation problem or taking anticoagulants (eg, warfarin). Vit A: Not to be used for treating vit A deficiency in persons w/ malabsorption syndromes. Chronic consumption may cause liver damage. Vit C: Patients w/ renal failure (risk of oxalate stones), erythrocyte G6PD deficiency (risk of hemolytic anemia), hemochromatosis, sickle cell anemia (risk of precipitating a crisis), thalassemia or sideroblastic anemia. Vit E: Monitor INR & adjusting of warfarin dose (if indicated) are recommended. Lesions that have tendency to bleed (eg, bleeding peptic ulcers), history of hemorrhagic stroke & those w/ inherited bleeding disorders (eg, hemophilia). Liver failure. Zn: Patients w/ kidney disease.
Adverse Reactions
Vit A: Dermatitis & photosensitivity reactions. Vit C: Diarrhea (doses ≥1 g daily), nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, heartburn, transient colic, flatulent distension, fatigue, flushing, headache, insomnia, sleepiness, mild increase in urination. Acidification of urine; precipitation of urate, cystine, oxalate stones or drugs in the urinary tract. Hemolysis in patients w/ G6PD deficiency (large doses). Vit E: Myopathy, HTN, thrombophlebitis, gonadal dysfunction, breast soreness, gynecomastia, creatinuria; increased serum creatine kinase, serum cholesterol & triglycerides; increased urinary estrogens & androgens; thyroid problems. Increased bleeding tendency in vit K-deficient patients eg, taking oral anticoagulants (doses >1,000 mg daily for prolonged periods). Increased risk of thrombosis eg, those taking estrogens. Se: Abdominal pain & cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, garlic-like breath odor, hair & nail changes, fatigue, irritability. Zn: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain/cramps, dyspepsia, GI discomfort/irritation, gastritis, diarrhea, metallic taste, loss of appetite, headache, drowsiness.
Drug Interactions
Vit A: Increased bleeding w/ anticoagulants (eg, warfarin). Potential for additive adverse reactions w/ retinoid (eg, etretinate, isotretinoin, tretinoin). Increased risk of pseudomotor cerebri w/ minocycline. May increase serum levels w/ statins. Vit C: Increased apparent t½ of paracetamol. Vit E: Hemorrhage w/ anticoagulants (eg, warfarin). Potentiate effects of antiplatelets (eg, aspirin, clopidogrel, ticlopidine) & herbs w/ antithrombotic activity (eg, garlic & ginkgo). Zn: Decreased absorption of antibiotics (cephalosporins, quinolones, tetracyclines) & bisphosphonates (alendronate, etidronate, risedronate). Additive effects w/ cholesterol medicines. Inhibits absorption of Cu & Fe.
