Tamsulosin HCl
Indications/Uses
Treatment of the functional signs & symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) including bladder outlet obstruction.
Dosage/Direction for Use
SR cap Adult BPH 400 mcg once daily 30 min after same meal each day, or 200 mcg once daily in patients unable to tolerate. May be increased to 800 mcg once daily in patients who fail to respond to 400 mcg after 2-4 wk. Cap Adult BPH 400 mcg once daily 30 min after same meal each day, or 200 mcg once daily in patients unable to tolerate. May be increased to 800 mcg once daily in patients who fail to respond to 400 mcg after 2-4 wk. Medical expulsion therapy: 400 mcg once daily for 1-2 wk or at least 1 mth.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow cap whole, do not open/chew/crush. 400-mcg cap: Take approx 30 min after the same meal each day.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Orthostatic hypotension. Severe hepatic insufficiency.
Special Precautions
BP reduction. Orthostatic hypotension. Avoid situations where injury can result to syncope. Prostate cancer. Priapism & ejaculation disorders. Intraoperative floppy iris syndrome. Sulfa allergy. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Hepatic & renal impairment. Infant & childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, infection (including cold, common cold, flu & flu–like symptoms), asthenia, pain, back pain, chest pain, abdominal pain, accidental injury, flu syndrome, neck pain, fever, chills, malaise, fatigue. HTN, palpitations, hypotension, postural hypotension, tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, arrhythmia. Diarrhea, dyspepsia, vomiting, nausea, constipation, dry mouth, tooth disorder. Peripheral edema. Arthralgia, myalgia, arthritis. Dizziness, dizziness (aggravated), dizzy spell, vertigo, syncope, orthostatic/circulatory collapse, somnolence, insomnia, depressed level/loss of consciousness, hypertonia, paresthesia. Rhinitis, pharyngitis, increased cough, sinusitis, dyspnea, lung disorder, epistaxis. Allergic type reactions eg, skin rash, urticaria, pruritus, angioedema & resp symptoms, skin desquamation, sweating, erythema multiforme, dermatitis exfoliative & Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Abnormal ejaculation, decreased libido, priapism, reduced semen vol, UTI, dysuria, impotence. Blurred vision & visual impairment.
Drug Interactions
Ketoconazole, erythromycin, paroxetine, terbinafine. α-adrenergic blocking agents. May lower BP & cause hypotension w/ PDE5 inhibitors. Warfarin. Cimetidine.
