Indications/Uses
Susceptible infections including intra-abdominal infections, meningitis, resp tract infections (including cystic fibrosis patients), septicemia, skin infection, UTI & infections in immunocompromised patients.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV Adult Nosocomial & ventilator-associated pneumonia, septicemia, gynecologic infection (eg, endometritis), skin & skin structure infection 500 mg every 8 hr. UTI, presumed infection in neutropenic patient 1 g every 8 hr. Cystic fibrosis Up to 2 g every 8 hr. Bacterial meningitis 2 g every 8 hr. Adult w/ renal impairment CrCl 26-50 mL/min 1 unit dose every 12 hr, 10-25 mL/min ½ unit dose every 12 hr, <10 mL/min ½ unit dose every 24 hr. Childn 4-18 yr w/ cystic fibrosis 25-40 mg/kg every 8 hr. Childn >3 mth-12 yr 10-20 mg/kg every 8 hr. Childn >50 kg Adult dose.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Caution in patients w/ previous hypersensitivity reactions to β-lactam antibiotics. Discontinue use if an allergic reaction occurs. No experience in patients under peritoneal dialysis. Not recommended in infants <3 mth. No experience in childn w/ altered hepatic or renal function. Should not be used in pregnancy & in breast-feeding women unless potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the baby.
Adverse Reactions
Thrombocythemia; headache; diarrhea, vomiting, nausea; increased ALT, AST, blood alkaline phosphatase & LDH, γ-glutamyltransferase; rash, pruritus; inflammation, pain.
Drug Interactions
Increased elimination t1/2 & plasma conc w/ probenecid.
