Furosemide
Indications/Uses
Treatment of edema associated w/ CHF, pulmonary, renal & hepatic disorders; renal insufficiency & severe hypercalcemia to promote urinary Ca excretion. Used alone for HTN or as an adjunct to other antihypertensive agents.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Edema 40 mg once daily. HTN 40-80 mg daily, alone or in conjunction w/ other antihypertensive agents. Childn 1-3 mg/kg daily. Max: 40 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
Anuria or renal failure due to nephrotoxic or hepatotoxic drugs; renal failure associated w/ hepatic coma; precomatose states associated w/ hepatic cirrhosis; prostatic hypertrophy or micturition impairment; porphyria; chronic cardiac failure & moderate liver congestion. In treating severe hypercalcemia, rehydrate w/ IV isotonic saline prior to administration. Pregnancy. Neonates.
Adverse Reactions
Transient deterioration in patients w/ chronic CHF. Ototoxicity & deafness associated w/ elevated blood conc. Fluid & electrolyte imbalance including hyponatremia, hypokalemia & hypochloremic alkalosis at large doses or prolonged administration. May cause hyperuricemia & precipitate gout attacks. Increased renal Ca excretion.
