Indications/Uses

Dosage/Direction for Use
Ulcerative colitis & Crohn's disease Adult Severe & moderate attack 2-4 tab qds in conjunction w/ steroids. Mild attack 2 tab qds w/ or w/o steroids. Maintenance Reduce dose gradually to qds. Childn Acute attack or relapse 40-60 mg/kg body wt daily. Maintenance 20-30 mg/kg body wt daily. RA Adult Initially 1 tab daily. May be increased to 1 tab daily each wk until 1 tab qds or 2 tab tds.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Ensure adequate fluid intake.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to sulfasalazine, sulfonamides or salicylates. Patients w/ porphyria. Infants <2 yr.
Special Precautions
Perform complete blood counts including differential white cell count, liver function test & renal function assessment including urinalysis prior to commencing & frequently during 1st 3 mth of treatment. Myelosuppression, haemolysis or hepatotoxicity. Renal or hepatic impairment or blood dyscrasias. Severe allergy or bronchial asthma. G6PD deficiency. Folic acid deficiency. Ensure adequate fluid intake. Oligospermia & infertility in male. Childn w/ systemic onset juvenile RA. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Leukopenia, insomnia, dizziness, headache, taste disorders, tinnitus, conjunctival & scleral injection, cough, GI disturbances, pruritus, arthralgia, proteinuria, fever.
