Posaconazole is used to prevent and treat fungal infections.
This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Posaconazole injection is to be given intravenously (into the vein). It is delivered directly into the bloodstream via the blood vessel.
Your doctor or nurse will administer the injection for you.
Ensure that you keep all appointments with your doctor so that you do not miss any doses. Your doctor also needs to regularly monitor your response to Posaconazole.
If you miss an appointment or miss an injection, alert your doctor or nurse. A replacement appointment or injection should be given as soon as possible.
Do not use this medicine if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to Posaconazole.
Do not use Posaconazole with medicines to treat migraine, heart disease, high cholesterol level, allergy, stomach problems, mental disorder and malaria. Please see the section “Can I take this with other medicines?” below for more information.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- heart disease e.g. heart rhythm disorder, heart muscle disease
- liver disease
- kidney disease
- body weight of more than 120 kg or less than 60 kg
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
If you are going for an operation, including minor surgery and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medicine.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly. Your doctor may also need to do routine blood tests (e.g. liver function tests, kidney function tests, complete blood count, and levels of calcium, magnesium, potassium in the blood) before and during treatment with this medicine.
Posaconazole may cause drowsiness or dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects include any of the following: headache, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain or discomfort, constipation, loss of appetite, fever, back pain, weakness, difficulty sleeping, chills, mouth sores, rash, itching, and muscle and joint pain.
If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop using the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes
- frequent and persistent sore throat with fever, unusual bleeding or bruising
- abnormal heart rhythm, muscle spasms
- abnormal eye movements, convulsions
- increased thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, trouble concentrating
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Do not take this medicine with the following medicines:
- medicines for migraine e.g. ergotamine, dihydroergotamine
- medicines for heart disease e.g. quinidine
- cholesterol-lowering medicines e.g. simvastatin, lovastatin, atorvastatin
- medicines to treat allergy e.g. terfenadine, astemizole
- stomach medicines e.g. cisapride
- medicines to treat mental disorder e.g. pimozide
- medicines to treat malaria e.g. halofantrine
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- other medicines for heart disease e.g. digoxin, diltiazem, nifedipine, verapamil
- other stomach medicines e.g. cimetidine, esomeprazole
- medicines used in organ transplant or certain immune disorders e.g. ciclosporin, sirolimus, tacrolimus
- medicines for epilepsy (fits or seizure) e.g. phenytoin
- medicines used to treat cancer e.g. vinca alkaloids such as vincristine, vinblastine
- medicines for HIV infection e.g. atazanavir, efavirenz, fosamprenavir, ritonavir
- medicines to treat TB (infection known as tuberculosis) e.g. rifampicin
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
