Fusidic acid - Ophthalmic

Patient Medicine Information
Why do I need this medicine?
Fusidic acid is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as conjunctivitis or pink eye (redness and inflammation of the membranes covering the white part of the eyes), blepharitis (eyelid inflammation), stye (small, painful red bump on the edge of the eyelid), and keratitis (inflammation of the cornea, which is the clear dome covering the coloured part of the eye).
How do I use this medicine?
Instil Fusidic acid eye drop in the affected eye(s) exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.

To use the eye drop, follow these steps:
  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before using the eye drops.
  2. Tilt your head slightly backwards. With the index finger, pull the lower eyelid away from the eye to form a pouch. Look upward and instil the required number of drops inside the lower eyelid. The medicine will come out as a thick drop and will become more liquid in your eye.
  3. Close your eye and do not blink for a few seconds.
  4. Wipe any excess liquid from your face with a clean tissue.
  5. Replace and tighten the cap of the tube.
  6. After using this medicine, you may see a white powder around your eye, this is normal as the medicine dries out. Wipe the powder off with clean cotton wool.
Do not allow the tip of the dropper of this medicine to touch your eyes, eyelids, or any other surface. Recap the eye drop immediately after use. If the eye drop becomes contaminated, it could cause a further infection in your eyes.

Do not share your eye drops with anyone else.

Do not wear contact lenses while using Fusidic acid.

Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on your condition and response to the medication.

Use Fusidic acid at regular intervals. Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of this medicine. If you don't, the infection will not be properly controlled.
What should I do if I have forgotten to use this medicine?
Instil the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose to make up for a missed dose.

If you often forget to use your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not use Fusidic acid if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine.
What should I take note of while using this medicine?
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Fusidic acid to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.
What side effects could I experience?
Fusidic acid may cause any of the following side effects: temporary blurred vision, swelling of the eyelid, watery eyes, and pain, itching, irritation, and discomfort in the eye.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor immediately. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I use this with other medicines?
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
How should I store this medicine?
Store below 25°C, away from the reach of children.

Throw away any remaining eye drops 28 days after opening. Mark the date of opening on the eye drop tube so that you know when to discard it.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
