Dequalinium chloride is used to treat vaginal inflammation caused by bacterial overgrowth (imbalance of bacteria that are normally present in the vagina).
Use Dequalinium chloride exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
It is best to use it in the evening before bedtime. Try to use it at the same time each day.
This medicine is available as a vaginal tablet.
To use the vaginal tablet:
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Remove the wrapper from the medicine.
- Lie on your back with both knees slightly bent and legs apart.
- Insert the tablet deeply into the vagina. If your vagina is dry, the tablet can be moistened with a drop of water before insertion.
- Wash your hands every after use.
Stop the treatment during your menstruation and resume afterwards.
Dequalinium chloride may contain certain ingredients which do not dissolve completely, and the remains of the tablet are occasionally found in the underwear. This will not affect the effectiveness of the treatment. The tablet will not stain your underwear but for your comfort, use a sanitary towel or pantyliner.
Use this medicine at regular intervals. Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of this medicine. If you don't, the infection will not be properly controlled.
Use the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to use your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not use this medicine if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to Dequalinium chloride or any of its ingredients.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- ulceration on the inner lining of your vagina or cervix (a neck that connects the vagina and womb)
- have not yet had your first menstruation
as Dequalinium chloride may not be suitable for you.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Dequalinium chloride vaginal tablet should not be used within 12 hours before birth to minimise exposure of the newborn to this medicine.
Avoid the use of non-latex condoms and other intravaginal devices (e.g. diaphragms) for at least 12 hours after treatment. You may discuss alternative birth control methods with your doctor.
Dequalinium chloride may cause any of the following side effects: vaginal discharge, itching, burning or thrush (fungal infection); and fever.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are using any other vaginal medicines or products (e.g. soaps, spermicides, vaginal douche or washes).
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
